Christmas in Whistler
Looking for the best way to experience the holiday season in Whistler this winter? Well look no further. Below is a tried and true list of things that you and the whole family (couples, too!) can do together when you’re not skiing the slopes. All of the following are also open late if you’re looking for some fun evening options that everyone can participate in.
Explore the Whistler Village
Not only is the village exclusively for pedestrians, but the village stroll (referred to by locals as simply, “the stroll”) is beautifully lit up this time of year. From hanging wreaths, to bright LED’s, to colourfully wrapped Dr. Suess-looking tree’s, you won’t have a shortage of twinkling things to look at. Pair your walk with a nice hot chocolate from one of the local café’s in the village and you’ll be set.
Tube Park
If you or the kiddo’s still have some energy to burn off after a day on the hill, head on over to the Coca-Cola Tube Park located at Base 2 area on Blackcomb Mountain. The park has multiple lanes, over 1,000 feet of snow to slide on, and always guarantee’s a good time. And two more great things about the tube park? First off, you don’t actually have to have a whole lot of energy for it, as it includes a special conveyor lift to bring you to the top! And second, if you’re visiting without a vehicle or simply don’t feel like driving to Base 2, the Excalibur Gondola located right in the village will take you up there for free.
Vallea Lumina
Another awesome option for more twinkling lights, and this time amongst the trees, is the Vallea Lumina winter exhibit. Since opening it’s wondrous display a few years ago, this extravagant multimedia night walk has been an absolute hit. It takes you on a colourful journey through the forest and tells a story of long-ago hikers and unexpected enchantment. A great perk to this evening adventure is that the ticket includes a complimentary shuttle service that takes you right from the Gateway Bus Loop to the venue.
Callaghan Valley
Feel like getting out of the hustle and bustle of the village for a day? Why not give cross-country skiing or snowshoeing a try. A great alternative to skiing in- resort, the Callaghan Valley has over 130km of groomed ski and snowshoe trails
for all skill levels and abilities. If you’ve brought your furry companion along with you during your Whistler winter stay, they can also be included in this activity as the Whistler Olympic Park offers the only groomed dog-friendly trail on the coast of BC.
Whistler Olympic Plaza
Located right in the heart of the village, the Olympic Plaza is home to a number of different events throughout the year. Once the snow arrives however, it transforms into a children’s paradise with free skating, toboggan hills, and a bonfire on the outskirts where you can get all nice and toasty. From 3-6 pm on select days throughout the week, the Resort Municipality of Whistler hosts Family Après in the plaza, where you can find a fun variety of activities and entertainment. Looking for something hot with a side of sweet while the kids are playing? Just a few short steps away you’ll find Purebread, a local café where you’ll be blown away by the amount of delicious treats to choose from.
